YOSA presents: San Antonio Pictures
San Antonio area high school student artists are invited to submit original art inspired by the music of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. A jury of professionals artists will review all submissions, and exemplary works will be featured during YOSA’s concert performance of Pictures at an Exhibition in the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Students whose artwork is selected will receive three (3) free tickets.
All artwork must be submitted by December 17, 2021. Selections will be announced by January 10, 2021.
Eligibility:
San Antonio Pictures is open to all students grades 9-12 who live in Bexar County.
Students may submit no more than one entry inspired by each musical selection.
Music Selections:
Artists should select a single section of the piece on which to base their work. Student work does not necessarily have to reflect the original story of each section—feel free to use the story and the sound of the music as a jumping-off point. Here are the sections from which you may choose:
Promenade
A recurring musical theme that represents the composer wandering through an art exhibition, looking at works created by his recently deceased friend.
Gnomus
A wooden nutcracker in the form of a comically monstrous gnome with crooked legs
The Old Castle
A medieval troubadour singing outside an ancient Italian castle
Tuilerie Gardens
Children playing and teasing each other in Tuilerie Gardens in Paris
Bydlo (Ox Cart)
heavy cart, pulled across the Polish countryside by a team of cattle
Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks
Costume designs for a ballet, featuring children dressed as baby canaries and unhatched eggs
Two Jews, Rich and Poor
Side-by-side paintings of a wealthy man and a homeless beggar, both around the same age
Limoges Market
The noisy crowd in a busy Parisian marketplace
Catacombs
The underground catacombs of Paris, explored by lamplight
Baba Yaga’s Hut
A phantasmagorical hut that runs around on magical chicken legs, home of a terrifying witch from Russian folklore
The Great Gate of Kiev
Monumental city gate with an arched entryway with a chapel and bell tower
